Grapefruit Fun Facts

  1. Grapefruit is a cross between a sweet orange and a pummelo and was introduced to Florida from the Bahamas by Count Odette Phillppe in 1823.

  2. Grapefruits come in many colors like yellow, pink, white or ruby in color. All varieties have a tangy-sweet flavor and are very juicy.

  3. The Ruby Red and the Marsh White are two of the main varieties of Grapefruit.

  4. Tangelo, a Florida juice fruit, has been produced by the fertilization of grapefruit flowers with mandarin orange pollen.

  5. A part of the citrus family, grapefruits are related to oranges, tangerines, lemons, and limes.

  6. Florida is the largest grower of grapefruits in the United States.

  7. Grapefruit grows on a large tree with glossy dark green leaves, from where the fruit hangs in clusters.

  8. The grapefruit got its name from the way it grows in clusters (like grapes) on the tree.

  9. The most common way to eat a grapefruit is to slice it in half and scoop the sections out with a spoon. You can also peel it and separate the sections like an orange or slice it into wedges.

  10. Grapefruits are a great source of vitamin C. One-half of a grapefruit provides all the vitamin C your body needs for the day.

  11. Grapefruit is available throughout the year, with most abundant supplies from January to May.

  12. Pummelos or Chinese grapefruits are the largest of the citrus fruits. The peel is thick and green, while the interior is white or pink. They are somewhat milder than regular grapefruit, but are very aromatic.

  13. Grapefruits that are heavy for their size and with thin skin are usually of the best quality and the juiciest.
