Watermelon is loaded with lycopene, the powerful antioxidant that studies suggest may lower risks for certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Tomatoes were generally used as the lycopene source during these studies, creating the perception that tomatoes are the best source of lycopene. While the actual amount depends on the variety and growing conditions, watermelon can, in fact, contain up to 40% more lycopene than an equivalent weight of tomatoes, according to a recent study by the South Central Agricultural Research Laboratory in Lane, Oklahoma and the Phytonutrients Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland.
