Thousands Sample Sundia Watermelon Juice during Race for the Cure® in San Diego
SAN FRANCISCO - Nov. 8, 2005 -- Sundia Corporation distributed thousands of 12 oz. bottles of Sundia Watermelon Juice to participants in the San Diego Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's ninth annual Race for the Cure® on Nov. 6. Over 15,000 people of all ages participated in the run to raise funds for breast cancer education, screening, and diagnosis for San Diego residents, as well as to support national breast cancer research programs.
“We were honored to be one of the product sponsors at Race for the Cure® in San Diego,” said Dan Hoskins, chief operating officer of Sundia Corporation. “While we're a young company and the newest of juice manufacturers, we wanted to make sure we contributed to some key events during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's commitment to educating the public about early detection was an important factor in our eagerness to participate in the San Diego event. It coincides with our efforts to educate the public on the health benefits of watermelon.”
Watermelon juice is loaded with vitamins A, B6, C, potassium, and lycopene, the powerful antioxidant that research suggests may lower risks for certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases. While health-aware persons generally associate tomatoes with lycopene, according to a study by the South Central Agricultural Research Laboratory in Lane, Oklahoma and the Phytonutrients Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, watermelon can, in fact, contain up to 40% more lycopene in an equivalent weight of tomatoes. (The actual amount depends on the variety and growing conditions, watermelon can, in fact, contain up to 40% more lycopene than an equivalent weight of tomatoes.) Further, the human body readily absorbs the lycopene from watermelon, whereas tomatoes require heat treatment.
Hoskins said that nearly 6,000 Race for the Cure® participants were able to sample the Sundia Watermelon Juice. “We were mobbed when the race ended,” he said. “It was all we could do to keep the product available, even with the refrigerated truck only a few feet away!”
Last month, Sundia also was the juice sponsor at Expedition Inspiration's 10th annual Take-a-Hike in Malibu. Co-chaired by Tea Leoni, the event raised $100,000 to benefit breast cancer research at Revlon/UCLA and USC Norris Breast Centers.
